Design Through a Digital Lens

As the architecture industry evolves, digital technology and media continue to play an increasingly important role in how projects are designed, evaluated, coordinated, and communicated.

BDG Architects is dedicated to continuous improvement and staying ahead of these developments. By integrating technology into a workflow founded in digital thinking, our teams gain a deeper understanding of each design and use that knowledge to create smarter and more efficient solutions.

Design Technology

As the architecture and design industry evolves, digital technology plays a critical role in delivering smarter, more efficient solutions. At BDG Architects, we integrate advanced tools into every phase of our workflow. Revit anchors our Building Information Modeling (BIM) process, supporting accurate coordination and data driven decisions. Our teams also use clash detection, artificial intelligence, 3D scanning and printing, and virtual and augmented reality to refine designs from multiple perspectives. This approach improves collaboration, streamlines delivery, and clearly communicates design intent from concept through construction.

3D Printed Models & 3D Laser Scanning

3D physical models play a key role in our iterative design process, supporting collaborative workshops with clients and the community. Using 3D printing, we communicate design intent, test multiple concepts, and bring ideas to life in a tangible way. These models help clients visualize the final result early, enabling informed decisions and reducing revisions later in the process.

As designs evolve, our models become increasingly detailed, helping stakeholders better understand scale, proportion, and context while encouraging creativity and exploration.

We also utilize 3D laser scanning technology to create accurate digital models of existing spaces. This fast, reliable approach improves site documentation, streamlines data collection, and enhances coordination with partners. By combining physical modeling with advanced scanning, we deliver more precise, efficient, and well informed design solutions.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is an advanced tool within our BIM workflow that simulates airflow, temperature, and fluid movement in and around buildings. CFD helps inform design decisions by analyzing ventilation, thermal comfort, wind conditions, and air quality performance.

We apply CFD to parking garage ventilation and exhaust dispersion, HVAC air distribution in interior spaces, and wind studies for site and rooftop occupant comfort. This data driven approach allows us to optimize building performance, enhance occupant experience, and design safer, more efficient environments.

Digital Design Process

01 — Capture

Gather accurate project information through digital tools such as 3D laser scanning.

02 — Model

Use Revit and BIM methodology to develop the digital foundation of the design.

03 — Explore

Evaluate the project from different points of view using digital models, physical models, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and Artificial Intelligence.

04 — Coordinate

Use clash detection, and shared digital information to communicate and coordinate with team members, consultants, clients, and stakeholders.

05 — Analyze

Use advanced tools, such as CFD or AI, to analyze the project and better understand, evaluate, and inform the design.

06 — Communicate

Present design intent through digital models, simulations, immersive technology, rendering, and 3D-printed models.

07 — Improve

Use the resulting information and understanding to create smarter, more efficient, and better-coordinated designs.

Connecting People Through Technology

Digital Design is not only about the tools used to develop a project. It is also about improving how design intent is shared and understood.

BDG Architects uses technology to communicate among our internal teams, consultants, clients, business partners, and stakeholders. These tools allow project participants to examine designs from multiple perspectives, understand proposed solutions, compare alternatives, and engage more meaningfully in the design process.
