This adaptive reuse of the former First Federal Savings and Loan of America building, designed by prominent local architect Harry A. McEwen, FAIA and built in 1963, began late Spring 2018 in preparation for the 2019-2020 school year. 220 Madison’s proximity to the University of Tampa, its wall to wall windows and central downtown Tampa location made this 14-story building a candidate for revitalization into boutique student housing. 48 apartments create a 126-bed student housing community arranged in a “macroapartment” style with 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units supported by a shared lounge and kitchen space in each. The repurpose of the building maintained existing retail space, office space for the building staff and created a third-floor common area for residents. Where there once were board rooms with dark wood veneer walls, there are now bright, modern apartments overlooking the downtown skyline. Original design elements of this historically designated building were restored or replicated during renovation. The end result is the resurrection of a grand old building with new purpose.
220 Madison was once an aging office building in an urban environment that has been reimagined as boutique student housing with built-in retail. BDG Architects was really excited to have been a part of this adaptive reuse project where we took a forgotten “background building” in Downtown Tampa and breathed life back into it.
